Photoshop Tutorial: Polaroid Photo Effect

This tutorial shows you how to change an image into a polaroid-like photo using Photoshop.

Step 1:  In Photoshop create a new image about 200 x 200 pixels.

Step 1

Step 2:  Fill the background layer with any colour other than white.

Step 2

Step 3:  Create a second layer and fill it with a different colour.

Step 3

Step 4:  Under Layer > Layer Style, click on “Stroke” and enter the following parameters: size = 10px, position = Inside, colour = white. Click “OK”.

Step 4A     Step 4B

Step 5:  Then set the Fill of that second layer to 0%.

Step 5

Step 6:  Create a new layer.  With the Rectangular Marquee Tool Rectangular Marquee Tool, select an area 50 pixels high from the bottom of the canvas and with the Paint Bucket tool Paint Bucket Tool, fill it with white as shown below.

Step 6

Step 7:  Above the background layer, create a new layer and paste the image you would like to use.  If necessary, click Ctrl+T, or go to Edit > Free Transform to adjust the size of the image to fit inside the polaroid frame (here is where the coloured background will help determine how large the image should be).  At this point you can make any adjustments to the image (I made a copy of the layer, changed the layer mode to “overlay”, and set the layer opacity to 75%.

Step 7

Step 8:  Create a new layer and place on top of all other layers.  With the Type Tool Type Tool, write a caption in a script font in black or blue to simulate handwriting with a ball-point pen.

Step 8

Step 9:  At this point we can keep these layers as the working file in case we would like to make any changes later on (i.e., to the text) or if we would like to use this as a template to create other polaroid-like images.  So, create a new layer and set it at the top of all other layers.  With this new layer selected, hit Ctrl+Alt+Shift+E which will Stamp all visible layers and post them into this new layer as shown below.

Step 9

Step 10:  Copy the stamped layer and paste into a new document.  (Save the other document as a template if you’d like).

Step 10

Step 11: Add a drop shadow (go to Layer > Layer Style > Drop Shadow) and enter the following parameters: distance = 1 pixels, size = 4 pixels.

Step 12: You may not be able to see the drop shadow so go to Image > Canvas Size and change the size to 205 x 205 pixels with the “Anchor” set to the top left corner as shown in the image above.

To create a collage or stack of polaroid-like images, increase the canvas size of the document and paste a few more images with the Ppolaroid look and repeat the drop shadow effect for each image layer.  (Hint: to quickly copy and paste layer styles, select the layer with the effects and right click, then select “Copy Layer Style”.  Next, select the layer you would like to apply the effect to then right click and select “Paste Layer Style”.)
