Photoshop Tutorial: Halftone Pattern

This tutorial shows you how to use the halftone pattern filter in Photoshop to achieve a subtle background pattern.

The steps in this tutorial should give you a subtle halftone pattern similar to below.

Step 1: Create a second layer and name this “halftone dots”. Press “D” on your keyboard to reset colours. Go to Filter > Render > Clouds.

Step 2: Then go to Filter > Render > Difference Clouds, repeat the difference cloud until you are satisfied with the results.

Step 3: To add a pattern, go to Filter > Sketch > Halftone Pattern and select the settings shown below. Click OK, then press Ctrl+F on the keyboard to repeat the process for added depth.

Step 4: Next press Ctrl+U on the keyboard to pull up the Hue and Saturation window. Check the Colourize box and move the sliders to select a colour for your pattern, similar to the settings below.

Step 5: Change the blending mode of the layer to “Linear Light”. Go to Filter > Stylize > Emboss and change the Angle to -166, Height to 2 pixels, and Amount of 50%. I also changed the layer opacity to about 60% and duplicated the layer. If you want the dots to stand out more, duplicate the layer by dragging it to the “Create New Layer” at the bottom of the layers window near the trash can.

You should end up with a subtle halftone pattern similar to below.
