The Beauty of Pro Bono: BC SPCA Animals Benefit

I have done pro bono graphic design work for the BC SPCA Vernon & District Branch since summer 2007. I am currently working on several projects including:
  • quarterly newsletters which I have redesigned with a new look and layout;
  • newspaper advertisements;
  • signage;
  • posters;
  • Christmas cards;
  • new website design
However, I feel one of the most important graphic design projects I have worked on so far is the colour-code system I created to help potential adopters find their ideal match for a new furry friend.

The colour-code system for cats and dogs uses coloured stickers that correspond to specific characteristics, and the appropriate stickers are placed on each cat or dog kennel card. In each of the adoption rooms or kennel areas there is a “legend” or reference poster that explains what characteristics each of the 5 colours for cats, and 8 colours for dogs, correspond to (an additional 3 colours are assigned to the dogs to specify the level of experience needed to walk a dog). For example, a green sticker for a cat means that the cat would be suitable in a home with other cats.

I designed this colour-code system to help both adopters and volunteers easily identify each animal’s characteristics such as if a cat is suitable in a home with dogs, or what kind of experience an adopter or volunteer needs to walk specific dogs. The system is designed to eliminate confusion as to what each animal’s behaviour is and to help adopters easily find appropriate matches, which is especially helpful if it’s a busy day at the shelter and there are not enough staff or volunteers to guide adopters in finding their ideal match. The ultimate goal of this colour-code system is to find more homes for cats and dogs more quickly.

Since this system was introduced on April 5, 2008, the shelter manager, staff and volunteers have noticed that this system has helped adopters find new companions, but more importantly it helps adopters find matches that are appropriate to their home environment.
